Here’s a quote from Democratic candidate Barack Obama at a rally today:
"You have a real choice in this election. Either Democrat would be better than John McCain. And all three of us would be better than George Bush."
I know you think such a thing is impossible; how could anyone actually be worse than the Shrub?
Well, let’s start with the fact that Dubya’s influence has been muted somewhat by his, well, lack of ambition. For all of his screw-ups, he could have done a lot worse, by working harder to "fix" them. In other words, each time George W. Bush has failed to pass something, he has chosen to go into the corner and sulk about it, rather than fight it. He’s also not very diligent at trying to get his point across, and he’s pretty much accepted the fact that he’s the worst president in history, and is doing nothing to change minds about that.
McCain, on the other hand, will be a very ambitious president. He is a right wing uber-Hawk who gets royally pissed when things don’t go his way, and has a tendency to work to make things happen, based solely on the fact that they "should" happen.
And McCain will have a lot of "compensating" to do. He’s "too old" to be president, to be sure, so he will be extra diligent at making sure he comes across as younger and more vibrant than he is. So, he will be more strident, and fight harder to get his way.
Then there’s the forgetfulness. Is there anything more dangerous than the concept of a president who may have Alzheimer’s? There are signs of that already; he has to know the difference between Sunni and Shia, and that al Qaeda would never have any connection to Iran, yet, he’s confused those repeatedly.
We’ve had eight years of absolute incompetence, by a guy who is a far right extremist. It really is possible for a far right extremist to be worse than Bush, if only because he’ll tend to be more competent at implementing his agenda.
