Immigration Ignorance Rears Its Ugly Head

I’ve been seeing this garbage posted many times ob social media over the last few years, and it never ceases to amaze me that, in the United States of America, there are people ignorant enough to think this was a valid point.   (Warning; if you’re allergic to stupid, protect your brain cells now and look away!):

YOU PASS THE NORTH KOREAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET 12 YRS HARD LABOR, YOU PASS THE AFGHAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET SHOT. YOU PASS THE AMERICAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET A JOB, DRIVER’S LICENSE, ALLOWANCE FOR A PLACE TO LIVE, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT SO YOU CAN READ A DOCUMENT. WE CARRY PASSPORTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES OR FACE JAIL TIME. REPOST THIS IF YOU AGREE!!!

If you have ever reposted anything like this because you agree, you should know that sane people are laughing at you. Hard. I mean, think about it.

If undocumented immigrants actually got all of those things, then explain why they hide. Our border enforcement officials deport thousands who have come here extra-legally. And let’s face it; no one gets free heath care, unless they show up at the Emergency Room and need treatment to stay alive. As for education, if the parents come into the United States illegally, why should the children suffer? In most cases, their parents are working their asses off at jobs that are back-breaking and low-paying. And what’s the alternative? Let their kids stay here and keep them ignorant? The rest of us have to live with these kids when they grow up. If they can learn something while they’re here, I say more power to them?

Strangely, that’s not even the dumbest part of this. Think about the above again.

The people who post this garbage live in the United States of America; a country where they are free to post stupid crap like this at will, and where they are free to get a passport and travel everywhere else in the world and enjoy the full protection of the United States government wherever they go. They enjoy one of the most prosperous and free societies in the history of the world.

But that, apparently, isn’t how they think we should be as a nation. Apparently, they feel the United States should emulate nations like North Korea, which is one of the most brutally repressive dictatorships in history, or Afghanistan, which is one of the most backward.

Like I said, most all of the undocumented immigrants who are here are working their asses off. If you can think of a plan short of using the military to drive them out, let’s hear it. We need a comprehensive immigration plan that creates a path to citizenship, and that most certainly does not make us like North Korea or Afghanistan.

Yes, we need to secure the border, but we don’t have to sacrifice our humanity to do so.

  1. What gets lost in the immigration ‘debate’ is the fact that it is the policies of the U.S. that are driving most of the illegal immigration. There always was, and always will be, illegal immigration. What’s fueling the large numbers of illegals can be attributed to NAFTA, and the fact that there are ‘businessmen’ who aren’t good at running their businesses using legitimate (legal) business practices, and are all too willing to exploit those forced to come here illegally. Think about this: Who would want to move to a foreign country, separated from their families, to work for the lowest of wages, and be subject to scorn and ridicule while doing so? Not too many, I would think.

  2. You know you’re a right wing, race baiting stooge when admiring North Korean and Afghan immigration policies is the highlight of your argument. Its sad Neo-Cons can’t think of a immigration policy that doesn’t rely on hunting down brown people. But then again, most of the right’s philosophy comes down to taking out brown people – so why am I surprised?

  3. Indeed, Milt, when people make these kinds of comments, they jettison exactly the things that make America “exceptional” in favor of the repression they purport to hate. Never could wrap my mind around why we would want to be North Korea-style repressive…
