I happened across Donald Trump’s CPAC speech last night and made the mistake of starting to watch it. I made it through about 15 minutes of it, which is a minor miracle; I usually have a visceral reaction to hearing his voice in any context. I went back and read the transcript and, as is the case with most trump speeches, it’s impossible to make sense of most of it.
According to the time stamp, the version of the speech I tried to watch was 2:04 and it started about 20 seconds before he hugged the flag during the playing of the god-awful “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood. It was the first sign something was amiss, mentally, as was his complete inability to be still. His inability to simply accept applause and mouth “thank you” points to a serious need to be the center of attention at all times.
Now, one thing you have to remember about Donald Trump. Since the beginning of his campaign, he has played to one audience. He has people who do nothing but listen to right wing talk radio and take notes. Not the hosts, mind you; that would be bad enough. No, He actually tries to reflect what the CALLERS think with his long, rambling speeches and other verbal diarrhea.
In other words, because he believes in nothing himself, Donald Trump has spent the nearly four years since he rode down the escalator at Trump Tower learning what the aptly-named “deplorables” believe and parroting their nonsense. Keep in mind, these people listen to Limbaugh, Hannity,
They call us “libtards” and their entire life is about “owning libtards.” That’s all they care about, seriously. They have no other agenda besides making us pissed off. They have no agenda, really, especially now that they’ve been in charge for most of the last 40 years and they have destroyed most of the nation’s infrastructure and infringed on our rights as much as they could. They whine about “welfare” and “handouts,” but those ended in 1996. They claim they want to make abortion illegal, but they have done as much as they can on that, too. It’s now a lot harder to get an abortion than it was when Roe v Wade was passed almost a half-century ago.
So, basically, Trump is playing to one constituency – stupid white people who think right wing talk radio is the key to their only goal in life, which is to piss off liberals. He can’t win with just that, but it’s all he knows. And since the American electorate had the largest collective brain fart in history in 2016 and allowed this idiot to become “president,” he’s parlaying that into the greatest victory in US history and the beginning of a string of these.
The rambling speech touched on all of his favorite talking points, most of which demonstrated an inability to discern what is true and what is false, or “fake.” He showed that he still doesn’t know or care about which issues matter most to any Americans except the “deplorables.” He threw them tons of red meat, meaning he “owned libtards” for two hours, at least from their perspective.
He tried to take on the “great tariff debate,” but failed miserably, in part because he doesn’t understand the issue at all. The result was a thoroughly incoherent rant about the policy of his that has done the most damage to the most people. While he brags about jobs coming back here, there is no evidence of that. In fact, the brick-and-mortar retail business is taking a massive hit lately, especially when it comes to stores that sell mostly imported goods. Prices on many goods have been rising precipitously, and a lot of very large companies have been laying off a lot of workers, as the trade war Donny started has been putting the squeeze on profit margins.
It was during his unintelligible rant on tariffs that Trump advised the audience that he had gone “off-script,” which meant he was riffing off the top of his head on a subject he clearly does not understand. That shows a type of phony “confidence” that narcissists insist on purveying; even though he clearly doesn’t understand economics at all, he has to convince his audience that he knows it all.
Then, desperate for more red meat he could feed the CPAC audience and the deplorables looking in, he started in on the Green New Deal, a liberal idea for saving the planet. He gave it this summary; “They want you to have one car instead of two. And it should be electric.” Predictably, the crowd went wild, as if there was something wrong with driving cars that are electric and which don’t belch out plumes of poisonous chemicals. Of course, we should also have two cars apiece because this is “America, where at least I know I’m free (as long as I’m white and Republican).”
There is no reason to say something so profoundly stupid, except to reach a particular audience whose only political ideology is to “piss off liberals.”
The speech contained all of Trump’s greatest hits. He peddled in racism. He was
Trump also said this about fires and climate change: “You have to clean it up. It’s called [forest] management. When a tree falls, you cannot let the environmentalists say you cannot take that tree out. It becomes a matchstick… the leaves, every once in a while, you have to remove the leaves.” This shows he doesn’t understand anything regarding environmentalism or forest management.
When he was trying to claim the “Never Trumpers” were failing miserably and “living hand to mouth,” this is what came out: “Everyone in this country, right now, because of our new economy is doing well, except for the Never Trumpers. But they are on mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Mouth-to-mouth. Mouth-to-mouth.”
For at least the 50th time in the last year, he claimed that we were on the verge of wiping our ISIL: “Probably today or tomorrow we will actually have 100% of the caliphate in Syria.” Don’t get excited. I’m betting we’ll wake up on Monday and ISIL will still have a foothold in the caliphate.
Trump then moved on to praising himself with his decision to go to Iraq, where he surprised the troops and showed the enemy where some of our troops were located. He said he was lonely, so he just up and decided to go to Iraq. That story, however, quickly morphed into a rant about how Hollywood discriminates against “conservatives.”
This is another direct quote that indicates something seriously wrong with his mind. “[Democrats] are embracing open borders, socialism, & extreme late-term abortion…lawmakers in NY cheered as they passed legislation to allow babies to be ripped from the womb of their mothers. Right up to the very moment of death… the will execute the baby.” This is something that has wafted through the right wing for a few weeks now, and it’s an insult to doctors, among others. Why would anyone repeat this, if they were cognizant of their surroundings?
There is something wrong with Donald Trump. The speech he gave yesterday was more reminiscent of a homeless woman I used to see in Hollywood, who would push her shopping cart everywhere and argue with people who weren’t there. It took about a year and a half, but a group of us worked the system to get her off the street. Certainly, we need to do the same when someone like that is living in the White House and pretending to be “president.” If someone ranted like this in a nice restaurant, we would call the manager and have him removed. We should do the same to the mentally ill person living in the White House. He is clearly unstable; it’s for his own good. And ours.
