Little did I know how prescient I would be in giving the hashtag #Failorina to Carly Fiorina last Fall. She has managed a feat little seen in politics: The Triple Splat!
1. A huge loss in her bid for the Senate in California.
2. An #EpicFail in her bid for the presidency including her horrendous lies about Planned Parenthood.
3. A disastrous 6 day term as Ted Cruz’s VP pick.
Down goes Fiorina! In fact, it happened quite literally indeed. Check this out.
By early Tuesday evening it was all over but the crying and an elbow to Heidi’s face for the Ted Cruz campaign. Donald Trump’s overwhelming victory all but guaranteed him the GOP nomination. Apparently, if God does speak to the Cruz family, He forgot to share it with GOP voters!
On Wednesday John Kasich suspended his campaign, such as it was. Kasich’s legacy will be to become an unanswered Jeopardy question in about 10 years. “He was a congressman, a governor and a failed presidential candidate in the 2016 election?” But as always, Stephen Colbert was ready to pay “tribute” to both Cruz and Kasich:
Technically Incorrect: With only one Republican left standing, the talk show host gives his traditional goodbye….
Trump’s attempt to show a softer side came during his acceptance speech. He talked about loving & cherishing each other. He demonstrated his deep understanding of complex global politics when he stated one major goal for his Presidency will be for people to say “Merry Christmas.” Not sure if Bill O’Reilly will appreciate losing the job as the protector of the sacred words.
Of course, the next day Trump hired Ben Carson to lead his, zzzzz, (oops, sorry, I nodded off there for a second) search for a VP candidate. The mind reels at the choices ahead. The last time someone hired someone to search for a running mate was in 2000, and we all remember what Dick Cheney did. Trump-Carson, anyone? One candidate to put them to sleep and the other one to scream at them to wake them.
The result is a disaster, of course. The Republican establishment is now forced to consider the disaster they have brought upon themselves. Stalwarts like the Bush and Romney families have already bailed on the Republican Convention while House Speaker Paul Ryan hedges his bets and refuses to endorse Trump, at least not yet. Senators like Ben Sasse are begging someone, anyone to mount a third party challenge to Trump. There is no doubt that Reince Preibus is practically mainlining Tums by now. His party is falling apart before his eyes.
On Thursday, as Americans celebrated Cinco de Mayo (once again, this is not “Mexican Independence Day”!) Trump made an earnest attempt to show his love for “Hispanics” by Tweeting the following:
Yes, that’s right. In order to fully show just how much he appreciated the victory of the Mexican Army over the French in the Battle of Puebla, he had the restaurant in the building he owns to make him a taco bowl. Maybe he figured Gen. Zaragoza fed his victorious troops Trump Grill taco bowls after the battle. Who knows? Samantha Bee had the best response:
“The best taco bowls are made by hardworking immigrants who don’t like being called rapists by a rich prick. I love inauthentic Mexican food!”
On a more serious note, this morning’s New York Times features an article quoting billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson’s endorsement of Donald Trump, disproving the stereotype that all Jews are smart! If you’ll recall, Adelson also poured tens of millions of dollars into Newt Gingrich’s campaign in 2012 (the Ted Cruz of that election,to be sure), then a couple of hundred million in the GOP’s war chest, only to see Willard Romney lose in a rout. Not the brightest bulb in the box.
(To stress, the following comes from SUE, not Milt!) My parents were Holocaust survivors. They were prisoners of a slave labor camp in Lodz, Poland. The Nazis brutally enclosed the Lodz Ghetto while transporting hundreds of thousands of Jews to work and die there. Week after week more Jews were forced in from neighboring towns & countries including German Jews. Former German soldiers often wore their German army uniforms were stunned that the country they loved and served would turn on THEM!
“They never lasted very long!” my father always said sadly.
Sheldon Adelson is exactly that kind of Jew, a delusional & foolish very rich man who thinks his money will protect him.
As George Santayana stated: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
In other Republican News:
A former Republican lawmaker in Michigan has pled guilty to health insurance fraud in Grand Rapids. The Republican, Dr. Paul Nathan DeWeese, says he managed to defraud Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan out of nearly $173,000 between 2012 and 2014 for injections that were given by nurse practitioners in Flint and Grand Rapids. Thanks to a plea bargain, DeWeese is free on bond and will have an opportunity to pay the money back before being sentenced on Aug. 15. That’s a lot less time and a lot more leniency than Republicans give most other drug dealers.
Republicans in the state of Missouri is certainly proud of itself, since this week, they were able to overcome a Democratic filibuster and pass another
voter suppression, er, Voter ID bill that they will send to Democratic Governor Jay Nixon’s desk. Nixon has vetoed several others, but this time, they may have the votes to override. (Source) Oh, but that was only the beginning, as Republicans are also on track to put a measure on the November ballot that would give a fetus full constitutional rights. During the debate, “State Rep. Tila Hubrecht, R-Dexter, said that women shouldn’t decide to get an abortion just because they are raped.
“It is not up to us to say ‘no just because there was a rape, they cannot exist,’” she said. “Sometimes bad things happen — horrible things, but sometimes God can give us a silver lining through the birth of a child.” (Source)
Those are your Republican family values, folks. If you can seriously call Hillary “Republican Lite” after reading that, put down the Kool-Aid. This is not a Republican outlier, this is Republican orthodoxy. It’s way they truly believe.
And finally, three Ron Paul 2012 campaign aides were found guilty yesterday of public corruption charges in a secret plot to buy an endorsement from an Iowa state senator for $73,000. They paid former Iowa state senator Kent Sorenson the money and he suddenly dropped his endorsement of Michele Bachmann and switch to the Paul camp, thus demonstrating Republican principles. (Source)
