BEWARE of GOP Dirty Tricks or, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” — George Santayana
With just over 3 months to go before the start of the Democratic National Convention beginning on July 25, we have entered not the silly but truly STUPID season!
Stop by social media and see for yourself. There’s a Pro-Hillary post immediately followed by a Pro-Bernie one, then an Anti-Hillary, then an Anti-Bernie and so on and so on…
The mutual mud-slinging is endless. Occasionally, there are actual posts and memes desperately trying to remind Democrats we are all on the SAME SIDE. It is gratifying to see they receive a much higher likes/shares/retweets than any of the negative ones. Really smart people keep their posting focused on defeating Democrats’ common enemy, which is the GOP. Polls, thankfully, continue to show Democrats overwhelmingly will vote for our nominee, no matter who.
Do you know the secret code to tell the difference between a Karl Rove paid GOP Troll or just an overenthusiastic supporter?
Neither do we!
A reminder though; it is far more likely that the ugliest, most heinous postings are being paid for by the Koch Brothers and through Karl Rove’s American Crossroads Super PAC.
The GOP play dumb but they are not stupid. They have let their far right base take over the Republican Asylum and the inmates are running wild. The frontrunners are a carnival barker who thinks that slogans equal policies (Donald J. Drumpf) and a religious fanatic so despised within his own party that only one Republican has endorsed him (Ted Cruz). Republicans know they are going to get crushed in the General Election. That means, they only one hope:
As “Turdblossom” and his well-paid band of infiltrators & pranksters gleefully poison both Democratic camps, too many on our side are falling right into their traps.
As Cher said to Nicholas Cage in the movie Moonstruck as she slapped him hard across his cheek, “SNAP OUT OF IT!”
Demoralize the Democratic base with phony press releases and whisper campaigns.
Attack opponents strength with character assassination.
Suppress the vote in every possible way.
Buy some people off with tax cuts.
Scare the rest into voting against their own interests.
By the dawn of the 20th Century, GOP began to refine and increase their stockpiles of propaganda and lies. Over the decades, it has only gotten far worse. Now with Citizens United, SuperPacs and dark money allow them to spend unlimited and often unaccounted-for amounts of money, in order to spread their toxic fumes throughout the political process.
Some people argue that the GOP has been compiling quite a dossier on that “Commie-Socialist” Bernie Sanders and want him to be our nominee as he will be much easier to defeat. With almost 40 years in politics, Bernie has, of course, made his fair share of enemies. Karl Rove learned his dirty tradecraft during Nixon’s re-election when it was decided that Edmund Muskie posed a far greater threat and faster than one could say Canuck, he was gone!
Let’s be smarter, kinder more tolerant of each other, and celebrate the Democrats’ good fortune, in that that we have TWO formidable and qualified candidates, either of whom will bring honor, excellence & competence to the White House. Let’s talk about policies and their differing strategies as to how they would achieve their goals. Do not fall prey to “ratfucking.”
When Jon Stewart tearfully said goodbye, he admonished us to, “If you smell something, say something!” Call out “Troll” if you see personal attacks or comments using eerily similar language.
Otherwise, we will continue to look more like Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck than the inclusive party of progressive critical thinkers we should be.
