Take the Threat Seriously

I am not usually one of those who worries easily. Most of the time, when a Republican says something stupid or somewhat threatening, I find it hard to take them seriously. For example, when some GOP idiot gets on the floor of the House and suggests that President Obama not show up in their state or district, I’m pretty sure the Secret Service will make sure any potential threat is minimized.

However, statements Donald Trump made Tuesday are more worrisome than most, and should seriously be addressed. This is what he said:

This one cannot be ignored. Not even a little. Not so much because I think Trump is a threat, but because his followers are more batshit crazy than usual. This is not a normal Republican base, full of ignorant rednecks drinking beer and stupidly waving confederate flags because they’re too fucking stupid to know better. No, the Donald Trump base consists of a lot more than ignorant racist redneck wusses. Chief among Trump’s biggest fans are white supremacists, including some who are more actively terrorist than any “Moose-limb” Trump could possibly name.

It does worry me a little that Trump seems to be unable to complete a thought and doesn’t seem to have a grasp of any sort of syntax. I mean, the grammar in the above is startlingly illiterate, even for Trump. But a guy who sends violent messages to a constituency that consists of violent racists feeling emboldened by his candidacy has to be taken more seriously than anyone else. Even the disgusting Ted Cruz had a line he wouldn’t cross. Trump apparently has none. He will do anything to come off as a winner; all he actually cares about is getting more votes. That makes him dangerous.

As someone on Twitter noted soon after Trump said this, there is precedent for the right wing calling for the death of a politician.

We didn’t take that seriously enough, apparently, and look what happened. No, the Second Amendment does not mean everyone can have as many of any type of gun that s/he wants. We sane people know that, but Trump’s voters are largely not an active part of the sane demographic.

I’m not easily spooked, but we have to take this seriously…

  1. You’re too late. You’ve stolen too much.

    by Rudyard Kipling

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late,
With long arrears to make good,
When the Saxon began to hate.

    They were not easily moved,
They were icy — willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the Saxon began to hate.

Their voices were even and low.
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd.
It was not taught by the state.
    No man spoke it aloud
When the Saxon began to hate.

    It was not suddenly bred.
    It will not swiftly abate.
    Through the chilled years ahead,
When Time shall count from the date
That the Saxon began to hate.
