Trump Didn’t Win. We Lost. AGAIN!

This was the worst election season in the history of the United States. I mean THE WORST.  Well, except for 2010 and 2014, that is.

I don’t say that because Donald Trump won the presidency, because he didn’t. We lost. Again. Once again, turnout that had been way up in 2008 and 2012, when we got behind the idea of the first Black president, dropped right back down again, just as it did in 2010 and 2014. And it’s no wonder, really. I mean, for almost two years, we had the loudest elements of the far right and the far left once again screaming epithets at Hillary and taking on Democrats with far more passion than they took on Trump and, especially, the Republican Party.

Christ, people; last night, I saw professional lefties all over social media trashing Evan Bayh and Patrick Murphy because they were “hand-picked” by Senator Chuck Schumer and they weren’t “progressive enough.” Oh, sure. Like Indiana and Florida, who both voted for Trump would have changed their minds if only someone farther left were running for the Senate. Yeah, that makes a hell of a lot of sense. That shows a complete ignorance of politics (candidates are recruited but not chosen by the Party. VOTERS choose the nominees.) I have also seen some bitch and complain because they’re convinced that Bernie Sanders would have beaten Trump, which makes absolutely no sense. How was that going to happen? If Democrats can’t win with a centrist running, how the hell does it make even a little sense that someone far to the left of Hillary would bring more voters to the polls. I mean, for Chrissakes, people; Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate to ever run for president; what the hell does the Democratic Party have to do to get progressive support? Sanders wasn’t going to get out votes from the center, which is where EVERY ELECTION IN THIS COUNTRY IS WON. (I capitalized that so perhaps it might penetrate those thick leftist skulls. Elections are NEVER won and lost from the far left or far right; they are won by those who show up to vote from the CENTER. If you don’t appeal to the center, you are ceding the government to the Republicans every time.

Why, you ask?

Because they are motivated to win and progressives – mainly white, college educated, well-off liberals – are not.

It’s true. Did you see the “Cautionary Tale” I posted over the weekend? (Go Here) I didn’t post that because some random person just posted nonsense in the comment section. I posted it because those were common complaints echoed by the professional left all election season long. While unicorn progressives and professional lefties are screaming, they are discouraging people from showing up at the polls. It happened again yesterday. The Sanders/Stein wing of the progressive movement once again did exactly what they did in 2000 and 2004. What? Did you think Nader was a spoiler because of the VOTES he got? NO! That wasn’t it at all. He was a spoiler because his followers decided, for some supremely stupid reason, that attacking Democrats and Gore/Kerry was the best way to get Nader elected. These same ASSHOLES did the same thing to Hillary. What? Do you think that a year and a half of talking about Hillary Clinton as if she was the spawn of Satan would have no effect? If you did, then why did you do it? And don’t say you didn’t. Hell, people, what do you think the Michael Moore surprise movie was about last week? Did you think he was attacking Trump with that? NO! He was trying to warn progressives that we had to mobilize and make sure Hillary won.

And we didn’t. And we lost. Look at the vote totals. When you combine them, the vote totals for both major party candidates are lower than they were in either 2008 or 2012, despite the fact that the population is larger. That’s because, while Trump was able to mobilize a bunch of white supremacists who never vote, the professional left was discouraging everyone else from voting by portraying Hillary Clinton as if she was, well, a spawn of Satan. They were just as active at keeping the Vast Right Wing Conspiracies alive and active.

Lefties blamed her for the banking crisis. Lefties blamed her for all of the Republican investigations. Lefties blamed her for Benghazi, and everything else she’s been accused of. In other words, the people who were trying to decide whether they should show up to vote were basically being fed the same stories about the candidates by the right and the left. Where was their motivation to vote?

Once again, Democrats lost because the unicorn left basically echoed the far right’s criticisms of Hillary Clinton and Democrats in general. I told you at the beginning of this journey; there was only one relevant issue this election and it was the Supreme Court. Now, none other but Donald Trump will get to replace Antonin Scalia and we will have to hope that the rest of the aging court can hang on for at least another four years. And it’s not just Trump. Democrats also failed to take back the House and Senate because the loudest element of the left continues to refuse to embrace and promote the Democratic Party. They keep demanding a “third party,” but they do nothing to actually create one. They complain about Democrats, but they refuse to join with the Party to change it. Instead, they whine and cry about the state of the politics. What happened yesterday happened in 1976 (Carter won a squeaker post-Watergate against a weakened GOP incumbent), 1980, 1988, 2000 and 2004. And it’s happened in every mid-term, save one, since 1974. Let me assure you; “Hillary/Gore/Kerry suck but they’re better than Bush/Trump” does not motivate anyone to the polls. Once again, most distinguished candidate in history; what the fuck is wrong with you? is it really so hard for white liberals to say that? Even if you don’t believe it, the people in the center whom we need to show up and vote will buy it, which means the country wins. the Republican Party is truly awful; why is that so hard for unicorn progressives to admit?

Until the entire progressive movement gets its head out of its collective ass, we will continue to operate from the fringes. that would be okay, except that the American people suffer because of that.

We lost this election because the far right understands that they have to win to do everything and the college-educated “geniuses” on the far left sees winning elections as “selling out. Trump will be the 45th president because the right, as stupid as they are, are willing to hold their nose and look toward the future and the far left, as smart as they tell themselves they are, are simply not.

They want it more than we do. It’s really that simple. Until that changes, we get no progressive political things.

  1. I would say i hate (not really hate, but hate) the far left as much or more than the far right for the exact reasons you mentioned. A complete inability to play the long game. If you can’t hold your nose and vote for a wonderfully qualified candidate to ensure the supreme court is not populated with paternalistic authoritarians then you deserve exactly what is about to come down the pipe. And this is going to be our supreme court for a generation(?) It’s really mind blowing that people can follow everything about every candidate and still not seem to understand how politics works. She’s not completely forthcoming? She bent the rules to her advantage? I defy you to find one politician who doesn’t do those things. She rose to the top playing the game the same way as everyone else and now after reaching the precipice of history we fall backward. SMH

  2. The bitter Sander’s supporters could not wait to get to Daily Kos fast enough last night and today saying “we told you so”. Hillary was a “flawed candidate”, “no integrity”, etc. I am done with Daily Kos, and all politics. I am thoroughly disgusted by our news media, who ambushed Hillary with lies, pounding her daily during both the primary and the GE. I am thoroughly disgusted by the so-called Progressive Left who hate Hillary and the Democratic Party so much that they can barely contain their glee at her loss to Trump. Today is one of the saddest days for our country and for me personally–and I have had some pretty sad days.

Thank you Milt for your top notch writing and for not taking crap from anyone. Your site and Media Matters will be the only places I plan to check into from now on. And thank you to Hillary Clinton for having the guts to take on just about everyone who by every dirty trick wanted to see her go down. Well, I guess they won but she still has her integrity and she will be admired by those who have not been brainwashed by the politics of personal destruction that she so accurately described many years ago.

  3. Agreed, Milt.

Johnson and Stein played the Nader role this year. I’m sure Stein is so damned happy that Hillary lost. I am feeling sick to my stomach over seeing this country which I love and I’ve called home for over thirty years just slit its own throat.

And to hell with the far Left. Once again, both they and the media screwed us all. And this time, I don’t know how we’ll deal with the damage.

Tell me what you're thinking!
