Imagine, if you will, that the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton featured the Clinton Legal team blocking all witnesses and all documents – and even better, all previously uncovered evidence – from being used in his trial. If you can imagine that, then you have one hell of an imagination, because as much as he hated being impeached, Clinton never even hinted that he and all Democrats in Congress would childishly hold back evidence and declare “executive privilege” on virtually every piece of evidence that might be incriminating.
And yet, here we are.
When Donald Trump first announced his plan to run for president, the Republican Party leadership seemed somewhat appalled and all but promised he wouldn’t win their nomination. Republican voters weren’t exactly enthralled by the millionaire grifter and con artist, either, as he had to climb slowly through the ranks. The first half of GOP primaries, he won a few, but he won with a plurality of votes and rarely received a majority of votes until every other candidate dropped out.
During the general election, there were rumblings from many other Republicans that Trump was an embarrassment to the Party because he knew little about anything. Even “Little Lindsey” Graham called him names and suggested that he would drag the party down if nothing was done.
Look how far they’ve come. Whatever Trump has on Lindsey now, it must be a doozy because Graham no longer thinks Trump is as bad as he did during the 2016 election. Graham claims Trump has “exceeded all expectations,” but you have to wonder what his expectations were, if that’s the case. Trump has done almost nothing, except remove huge blocks of regulations from the books, without any sort of rhyme or reason, and brag on himself for the performance of the stock market, which has little to do with government action, and place in a near-crippling trade war with China and other important trading partners. If that qualifies as “exceeding expectations,’ it is clear the GOP is beyond simple incompetence.
Put simply, the Republican Party should be dead, and if you don’t see that, you are part of the movement to destroy American democracy. And I don’t give a flying fuck if you think I’m being hysterical, it’s time we were all on the same page, in which reality takes precedence.
One major political party is beholden to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who has been attempting to sow chaos all over the democratic world, as a way to inflate his nation’s stature in the world. It has gotten so bad, we now have Republican Senators actively and openly covering up impeachable crimes because they think they can. “Moscow Mitch” McConnell has done everything he can to rig Trump’s impeachment trial so that the public hears nothing of what happened when the “president of the United States” tried to get a foreign leader to dig up dirt on a political rival, which is not in service to the country, but rather his very own political campaign. While it is not necessary for an impeachable offense to be a black-letter violation of the law, Trump’s actions on the Ukraine broke two specific laws on the books.
According to 11 CFR § 110.20 (52 U.S.C. 30121, 36 U.S.C. 510), it is against the law for any candidate or campaign to solicit anything of value from a foreign source. (Source)
The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (at 2 U.S.C. §§ 601–688), makes it illegal for any president to misappropriate funds authorized by Congress, which is what Trump did as a carrot and stick to bribe the Ukrainian president into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden. (Source)
These are two very obvious crimes committed by the “president,” but the entire Republican leadership is hell-bent on letting him get away with them. The president breaks two laws, and “Moscow Mitch” and the entire Republican leadership is thinking they’re going to get away with helping him get away with breaking the law, and they seem stupid enough to not notice that the public isn’t buying it. In the latest polls, Trump’s approvals are still below 45% and he’s still more than 11 points underwater, with 56.6% disapproving and only 42.2% approving. Hell; as of now, a slight majority of Americans (51%) are in favor of impeachment and removal. (Source)
There is no way this is good for the Republican Party, which means we have an opening to save our democracy, However, it will take all of us working together to do the only important thing we have to do in this, the most important election year of our lives. I know you’ve heard that before, but this time, it’s true.
The Republican Party must be ousted from power at every level of government. This year. We cannot wait. The current incarnation of the GOP is under the spell of the Russian government, who want nothing more than to create chaos here. However, the chaos creation can only work with our help. If you are up in arms over what Hillary Clinton said about Bernie Sanders in her documentary, you should be aware that a lot of the rancor you see was created by Russian bots and trolls trying to create divisions among Americans in social media and beyond. Think about it; the Clinton quotes came from a documentary that most people will never see, so how did they become such a hot topic? Was it coincidence, or was it an intentional attempt to sow discourse among us liberals, thus making the election season more chaotic, thus discouraging turnout later this year.
As the very knowledgeable Malcolm Nance likes to say, “coincidence takes a lot of careful planning.” Do not assume that it’s just coincidence; at this point in our history, it’s okay to assume someone is starting some shit. However, while we should assume something is up, we should also not allow it to undermine our democracy.
It’s time all self-proclaimed “progressives” started acting like it. Our democracy will not survive if we don’t recognize the Republican Party for what it has become. Donald Trump wasn’t a Republican before he decided to run for president, but he knew he could more easily manipulate that party than the Democrats, if he had run in that primary. And he’s doing it because the GOP no longer believes in anything except gaining and maintaining power. And only power. They have no interest in governing, as evidenced by the fact that, every time they run the government, it’s run into the ground. They cut taxes to the bone, even as they started wars and sspent like drunken sailors. They bitch about deficits and debt, even as they explode them to a greater degree than anyone before them. The GOP not only contains racists; they even kowtow to them, even as they help the Russians sow seeds of discord in our system. This country is not as polarized as advertised. It’s just that one major political party has gone absolutely batshit and can’t deal with reason.
Come on, Progressives. Be progressive. Stop attacking Democrats, in service to Russian propaganda, and start focusing like a laser on the real excesses of the Republican Party. They are sitting right out there, and they’re easy to find. Your plan should be to vote for whoever gets the Democratic nomination and support them fully because if we do NOT vote that way, it could mean the end of democracy as we know it. The Republican Party will see to it.
