WTF are You Protesting?

The number of “progressives” and “liberals” who are plannng to vote for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson seems to be dwindling, thank goodness. However, the number should be zero. No liberal in their right mind should even think about voting for Gary Johnson, who is a right winger who happens to be  against drug laws and (some) war. Stein has no experience doing anything political, so electing her is tantamount to hiring the guy who just delivered your pizza as CEO of your multi-billion-dollar company. It makes no sense.

Yet, I am still hounded by these people on a regular basis and all of them describe their vote as a “protest vote.”

Really. A “protest” against what? And since when does any liberal with a pulse “protest” in a way that does harm to the people we claim to care most about, like minorities, the poor, children, gay people, women, etc?  And please don’t tell me you’re protesting against the “status quo” or “the establishment” because that is the SAME THING Trump voters claim. Besides, if you really cared about changing the status quo, you would have to be intent on getting rid of the Republican Party. They are the epitome of the status quo and they invented the establishment. They are the party of Hoover, only they’ve mixed in some white supremacy, as well. They literally combined the odious Taft Wing of the old GOP and the Dixiecrats from the old Democratic Party and created a political movement that promises to bring fascism to America. You can tell because they wrap their fascism in the American Flag and God to make it more palatable.

So, what are you people “protesting,” exactly? The Democrats haven’t really been in power for any length of time since 1980. Since 1980, they have controlled the federal government in 1993-1994, when they banned assault weapons and set up the economy for its first real wage growth since the 1960s, and in 2009-2010, when they ended the Bush Recession and instituted the first attempt at universal health care in history. Therefore, if you’re blaming anything bad that’s happening now on Democrats, you have been drinking some sort of soft drink, whether it’s Kool-Aid or something else. It’s all the Republican Party. The only goal of the GOP is to stop Democrats from making progress, and they’ve been very successful at that, with the acquiescence of the types of “liberals” who would vote for Jill Stein in a race featuring Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Therefore, if you have a problem with the “status quo” or “the establishment,” you want to set your sights on Republicans.

That’s why it’s puzzling to me why you think a vote for Stein or (especially) Johnson is a protest vote. Neither one will get more than 5-6%. If Johnson gets 6% of the vote, most of those voters will be Republicans casting their own “protest vote” against Trump. Stein will be lucky to get 3%, and it will be more likely be about 1% and most of them will be “protesting” Hillary Clinton. And I’m sorry, but that’s just stupid. There’s nothing else to call it, given the circumstances.

There are times when you can make a case for a protest vote, I suppose, although I’m not sure when there has ever been a presidential race where one made sense. But this year? It has never been LESS appropriate. Keep in mind, only two candidates have a chance of actually winning. Also keep in mind that the GOP actively tries to drive down turnout because it’s the only way they can win. Consider:

The next four years is likely to feature at least two additional Supreme Court nominations. At a time when you claim to care so deeply about campaign finance reform, civil rights for LGBTQ people, minorities and women, what the hell are you doing effectivet giving Trump a better chance of winning?

Reproductive rights are hanging by a thread. Every law that has been passed in order to limit access to abortions has been passed by Republicans. EVERY SINGLE ONE. Why would you “protest” by throwing more support to Republicans up and down the line?

Everyone agrees that the ACA was a great start, but it needs a hell off a lot more work to become a universal health system. What the hell are you “protesting” when you give the Repubicans a better chance to win, thus a better chance to limit women’s rights even more?

Any vote for a third party candidate for president is a wasted vote, but it’s never been more of a waste. Since it reduces the size of the pool of available Democratic votes, it gives Republicans a much greater chance of winning. Since Republicans are the architects of everything bad that’s happened in the last 40 years, what’s the purpose of “protesting” Democrats? You literally cannot think of anything bad over the last 40 years that can be blamed on Democrats. Go ahead, come up with something. I dare you. The comments are open. Go for it.

If you’re voting Jill Stein, you’re voting your own ego. You’re not “protesting,” you’re an idiot.

WTF are You Protesting? — 4 Comments

  1. Right now Fox has a headline stating that Bernie Sanders is OFFENDED by Hillary’s Clinton’s basement comments. Its a huge lie and the third party people and Trump supporters are spreading it. Bernie Sanders went on ABC and DEFENDED Hillary Clinton’s basement comments as it backed up the reality for many people effected by recession

  2. Voting Third party is like going to a restaurant with friends and ordering something not on the menu, and then watching all your friends eat. its self-sabotage and they get NOTHING.

  3. I get the “she supports what I support” nonsense, like HRC doesn’t support 85% of what they do anyway. It’s easy for Stein or Sanders for that matter to propose anything if they know they will never have to actually try to get it into law.

These liberals have bought into the GOP untrustworthy meme hook line and sinker and try to wrap that up in a fairy tale that is either Jill Stein or Gary Johnson.

  4. “You’re not “protesting,” you’re an idiot.”

Actually to me it looks more like a toddler having a tantrum.

I can’t think of a single issue that a progressive, leftist, liberal, Bernie supporter or for that matter a basically sane person would care about that would not be seriously damaged and go into immediate reverse if Trump were somehow elected, and even worse if one or both houses of Congress remains in Republican hands. With Clinton they might have to compromise on some issues (I have no idea what they might be) but at least the policy for it is well spelled out on her web page.

So I have to conclude that such protest voters never cared about any of the issues to begin with. They just wanted a hero all their own and be high up in the cult surrounding it.
